Your first subway journey in Seoul

Save the line, direction, transfer station and destination exit before entering the station. A station name alone is not enough to explain the whole journey.

This is a planning workflow for a visitor using Seoul's urban rail network. Read your actual route and station notices for the service you board; airport express and intercity trains need their own ticket checks.

Turn directions into a short note

Use your map app to make a note with four parts: departure station, line and direction, transfer if needed, and destination exit. If you need step-free access, check the accessible route rather than assuming the closest entrance has a lift.

At the station, compare the platform's next stations or destination with your route. A shared line colour does not settle which direction or service you need. Allow time to read signs before joining a boarding queue.

Choose a card or a single journey

KTO's subway guide explains rechargeable cards and single-journey tickets. It also describes returning a single-journey card through a deposit refund machine. Treat the machine's current instructions as the reference for the ticket you purchase; this older overview is not used here for current fares. Open the subway and ticket guide.

Seoul has separately announced foreign-card payment for single-journey tickets at designated newer machines on Lines 1–8. Availability at those machines does not mean a foreign bank card can be tapped directly at every gate. Read the payment announcement.

Follow the journey in stages

Have your ticket ready at the gate and follow its reader instructions. If the gate refuses it, ask staff before entering. On the platform, let arriving passengers leave before boarding and keep the doorway clear.

For a transfer, follow the signs for the next line and check direction again. Avoid heading through an exit gate merely because another line is nearby; confirm the intended transfer path first. At the destination, choose the exit that matches your final walking route and follow the gate instructions with your ticket ready.

If the journey changes

When you miss a stop, pause and plan a new route. Do not assume you can change platforms without leaving the paid area at every station. Show staff the destination if you are unsure. For a late journey, check the last usable connection for your whole route, including the transfer.
