How to take a city bus in Seoul

Check the route number, direction and exact stop, then keep your transport card ready for boarding and leaving. This page is for ordinary city journeys, not a ticket guide for airport coaches or intercity buses.

Identify your stop before you wait

Use a route search to save the boarding stop and the stop where you will get off. Compare the map location with the stop sign and the bus's route number. Stops on opposite sides of a road can serve different directions even when their names look similar.

Prepare payment before the bus arrives

Use a transport card accepted by the service and check its balance beforehand. Do not build your arrival plan around being able to pay cash on a particular bus. For a group, one card per traveller keeps the process easier to follow; special multi-passenger arrangements have separate transfer conditions in the official guide.

Board, ride and leave

The Soul of Seoul's illustrated article describes boarding at the front, tapping the reader, using a stop-request button and exiting through the rear, with exceptions directed by the driver. Once aboard, take a seat or hold a fixed support before checking your phone. Keep luggage clear of doors and leave marked priority spaces available. Watch the approaching stops so you can request yours without rushing at the last moment.

Tap the card when leaving. Seoul's official transfer guidance specifically requires an exit tap; changing vehicles is not an unconditional free ride. Check the current conditions for your next journey.

If something does not match

If the stop name or bus direction is unclear, show the destination before boarding. If you miss your stop, get off safely at a later stop and recalculate. Do not attempt to step off and reboard a moving or departing bus to correct a route mistake.
